About Attorney Archie L. Hayman
An experienced criminal defense trial lawyer and former Genesee County judge
Archie L. Hayman was born and raised in Flint, Michigan. He is a product of the Flint School system during its most effective period in education history, when it was the model for education in this country. As a 1974 graduate of Flint Northwestern High School, Mr. Hayman began working as a full-time production worker at General Motors. He simultaneously enrolled as a full-time student at Mott Community College, earning an Associate’s degree with high honors. The next step for Mr. Hayman was obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Business at the University of Michigan – Flint. Again, he graduated with high honors. Following graduation from the University of Michigan, Mr. Hayman went on to attend the Detroit College of Law (which is now the Detroit College of Law at Michigan State University). Throughout his time as a full-time student, Mr. Hayman continued to work full-time for General Motors. During his career with General Motors, he was promoted several times, retiring in 1987 as a Labor Relations Representative.
Mr. Hayman was admitted to the Michigan Bar in 1985 and began his career as a Criminal Defense Attorney. In his first year of practice, he was named Co-Defender of the Year along with longtime criminal defense attorney Fred Robinson. During his first ten years of private practice, Attorney Hayman tried many high-profile criminal cases, securing numerous NOT GUILTY verdicts for his clients.
In 1995, Attorney Hayman successfully ran for a seat on the 68th District Court for the City of Flint. As a District Court Judge, Attorney Hayman presided over criminal, traffic, drunk driving, and civil matters of all kinds. After one and one-half years on the District Court Bench, Attorney Hayman was appointed by the Governor of Michigan to the Genesee County Circuit Court.
From 1996 to 2017, Attorney Hayman served as a Judge in the Genesee County Circuit Court Criminal and Civil Divisions, acting as the Court’s Chief Judge for 6 of those years. He retired in 2017 after serving for 24 years with distinction. Attorney Hayman left a legacy of honor and excellence, handling his cases with even-handedness and well-reasoned decision making. He earned the respect of his fellow judges and the legal community.
Attorney Hayman’s next step was to re-enter the world of private practice, once again focusing on criminal matters. Since his re-entry into private practice, Attorney Hayman has handled numerous cases, taking many of them to trial. His case load ranged from drunk driving and assaults to more serious offenses such as homicide, criminal sexual conduct, and major drug allegations. Using his background as a trial attorney as well as a District and Circuit Court Judge, Attorney Hayman has again been able to secure a number of NOT GUILTY verdicts for his clients.
During this time, Attorney Hayman also served on the Michigan Civil Rights Commission in the position of Vice-Chairperson. He was also awarded “The Most Distinguished Alumni Award” from the University of Michigan/Flint as well as being a recipient of The Frederick Douglass Award.
After nearly forty years of working together in the Genesee County legal community, Attorney Hayman has joined forces with Frank and Mike Manley to become a member of the “Manley Shark Team”. His unique experience as both a criminal defense trial specialist and District and Circuit Court Judge brings a valuable and distinct perspective to the Team.
